Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE - based on the Schroth Method)
Dr. Tisdall is Level 1 trained in the Rigo Concept. The Rigo Concept is a world-renowned evidence-based model of care for patients with scoliosis based upon the original Schroth Method principles of 3-D exercises for cognitive, sensory-motor, and kinesthetic development.
In the 1920s, Katharina Schroth developed a specific methodology for the treatment of scoliosis utilizing specific postures and breathing patterns, coined as rotational angular breathing, to elongate and detorsion the spine.
Since then, multiple physicians and physiotherapists have learned from her approach and continued to build and progress this understanding of scoliosis and treatment methodology.
Manuel Rigo MD, is one of those who continued to carry the torch and was trained at the original Katharina Schroth Clinic in Germany in the 1980’s. In 2009, Dr. Rigo, along with Elena Salvá and Dr. Gloria Quera-Salvá, created the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School to continue to teach physical therapists the 3-D treatment approach to scoliosis developed by Schroth and further progressed by these practitioners. This institution now teaches the Rigo Concept, a 3-D scoliosis treatment based on the principles of Katharina and Christa Lehnert Schroth.
What many people and medical professionals commonly refer to now as “Schroth Method” may be more accurately termed physiotherapy scoliosis specific exercises (PSSE).
